School Bus Driver Cited For Reckless Driving In Iredell County

STATESVILLE, N.C. — An Iredell-Statesville Schools employee has been suspended after receiving a traffic ticket while driving a school bus on Wednesday.

According to Highway Patrol, around 7:45 a.m., troopers received calls about a bus that was driving reckless on NC 115 near I-40. Troopers were then dispatched to the area where they located 59-year-old Cheri Mayberry of Olin.

Mayberry told a trooper that she was fatigue.

The driver was cited for Careless and Reckless Driving and Driving Left of Center. Authorities say there was no evidence of impairment.

There were high school students from three Early College locations on the bus at the time of the incident. The students were from the Collaborative College Technology and Leadership, Crossroads Arts and Science Early College and the Agriculture Science Early College. The bus transportation director sent a new driver to transport the 24 high school students to their appropriate schools.

An Iredell-Statesville Schools official says Mayberry has been a bus driver for three years and has driven buses in other districts in North Carolina for over 30 years.

Mayberry has been suspended with pay while the case is investigated.
