JCSU Sustainability Village
Blue Cross Blue Shield and Johnson C. Smith University team up to tackle food insecurity in West Charlotte. BCBS is investing 325 thousand dollars to expand JCSU’s ‘Sustainability Village.’
The project was developed in 2013 to eliminate what’s considered ‘food deserts’ in West Charlotte, due to a lack of grocery stores, and farmers markets in the area. The investment will fund three new greenhouses to grow fruits and vegetables. The sustainability village also provides a huge learning opportunity for students. The greenhouses are on track to be completed in about 9 months, with the first harvest expected thus coming spring.
