Mecklenburg County Deputy Fired After Being Charged With DWI

CHARLOTTE, NC — The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy was fired Friday following an arrest for DWI and carrying a concealed handgun.

The arrest happened shortly after midnight on September 7 in Union County. Officials say DeWayne Huggins was off-duty and driving a personal vehicle when he was stopped by Union County Sheriff’s deputies.

Huggins was also in possession of a personally owned, not MCSO issued, handgun, according to officials.

He is charged with Impaired Driving and Carrying a Concealed Handgun (while at any time the person has remaining in his body alcohol previously consumed).

The MCSO says Huggins was terminated Friday following the charges. He had been a deputy with MCSO since 2009.
