COLUMBIA, S.C. — Governor Henry McMaster says over 420,000 people have been evacuated from coastal South Carolina and says that more people are expected to leave today.

Officials also said that lane reversals have aided the evacuations.  Approximately 51,000 vehicles have been moved on I-26 since the evacuations began and about 31,000 vehicles on Highway 501.

However, Highway 501 is no longer reversed and I-26 will not be reversed as of 6 p.m. Thursday evening.

There are 61 shelters open across South Carolina.  The shelters are currently operating at 12% capacity with 4,358 citizens seeking refuge.

Governor McMaster reminded citizens that dangers from Hurricane Florence will exist even after the storm has passed.

McMaster stated, “We’re as well prepared as anyone in the country for these types of events.”
