Suspect Arrested For Overnight Vehicle Break-In, Gun Theft

CHARLOTTE, NC — CMPD has charged a man they say broke into a vehicle and stole a gun while the owner slept overnight Thursday.

The incident happened just before 3:30am on Olmstead Park Place in south Charlotte. The victim told police he was in bed when he heard his car alarm go off, and saw the suspect sitting in his front seat when he looked out his bedroom window.

Police say the suspect, later identified as Jumel James, stole a firearm from the victim’s center console.

The suspect was located about 30 minutes later when police say he was spotted checking vehicles on Mainline Drive for unlocked doors. Officers say James was arrested after a brief foot chase involving a K9 unit and transported to CMC with minor injuries.

The firearm was recovered at the scene.

James is charged with two counts of Breaking and Entering a Motor Vehicle, Larceny of a Firearm, and Possession of a Stolen Firearm.
