RALEIGH, N.C. — In his Friday morning news brief, Governor Roy Cooper said about 500,000 people are without power and nearly 200,000 people have relocated to over 100 shelters in North Carolina.
Governor Cooper described Hurricane Florence as powerful, slow and relentless, calling the storm an uninvited brute , who doesn’t want to leave.
State officials say Pamlico and Craven Counties have been impacted significantly by the flooding of several major and secondary roads. They say the impacts are primarily from the storm surge and believe that Hurricane Florence is a 500 to 1000 year flood event.
The city of New Bern saw over 100 swift water rescues overnight and into Friday, but there have been no storm related deaths, according to the governor.
National Guard Major General Gregory Lusk said over 500 activated N.C. National Guard soldiers are and airmen are already responding to calls statewide.
Governor Cooper also advised enthusiasts not to fly drones, as it may hinder rescue efforts.
