Man Shot After Taking Hostages At Salisbury Harris Teeter Released From Hospital, Arrested

SALISBURY, N.C. — The man who was shot by a police officer after taking five people hostage at a Salisbury Harris Teeter in July has been arrested by police, following his release from the hospital.

Cody Schimmels, 30, was taken into custody by the Salisbury Police department on September 13, 2018, after a two-month stay in Wake Forest Baptist Hospital.

Schimmels is charged with five counts of first degree Kidnapping and one count of Attempted Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon. He is being held at the Rowan County Detention Center under a $750,000 bond.

The suspect who was shot by police after taking hostages at a Salisbury Harris Teeter has been identified.

Authorities have identified the suspect as 30-year-old Cody Maxwell Schimmels of Salisbury.

Schimmels is at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem receiving treatment for his gunshot wound, where he was said to be in critical condition.

SALISBURY, N.C. – A Salisbury police officer is on administrative leave after shooting a suspect who took employees hostage at a Harris Teeter in Salisbury late Thursday night.

Around 11:30 p.m., Salisbury Police were called to the Harris Teeter Grocery Store at 850 West Jake Alexander where an armed robbery was happening.

When officers arrived to the scene, they found a suspect armed with a handgun holding hostages inside of the store. They attempted to negotiate a peaceful surrender.

According to police, the armed robbery suspect presented a clear threat to harm one of the hostages with the handgun. In response, an officer fired a shot and struck the suspect.

The suspect was immediately given aid by the officers and Rowan EMS. All the hostages being held in the store were simultaneously evacuated to safety. Β The suspect was taken to Novant Rowan helipad and transported by helicopter to North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem for treatment of his gunshot wound. The suspect is still being treated for his injuries and is said to be in critical condition.

There were no injuries to either the hostages or police.

The NC SBI will be conducting the investigation into the officer involved shooting and Salisbury Police Criminal Investigations will be investigating the robbery.

The names of the officer who fired his rifle and the suspect have not yet been released.
