Man Fatally Struck By Car On Independence Boulevard, Driver Not Charged

MATTHEWS, N.C. — A man was hit by a car and killed on Independence Boulevard on Saturday.

Officers with the Matthews Police Department were called at 9:45 p.m. to the 11300 block of E. Independence Boulevard where 41-year-old Matthew Mayfield of Lexington, S.C., was struck by a vehicle.

When officers arrived, they observed Mayfield laying unresponsive in the median. Medic pronounced him dead on scene.

Authorities say Mayfield was attempting to cross East Independence Boulevard from the westbound travel lane when a car traveling west on East Independence Boulevard fatally struck him.

The driver remained on scene and was cooperative during the course of the investigation. The driver will not be charged.

Police are asking anyone who is walking or running near roadways to please dress in bright clothing and/or wear some type of reflective product, especially at night. They urge pedestrians to always comply with marked crosswalks for their safety.
