Man Arrested After Intentionally Setting South Charlotte Business On Fire

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man has been arrested after police say he set fire to a grocery store in south Charlotte on Tuesday.

Firefighters with the Charlotte Fire Department were called around 11 p.m. to the Payal Indian Grocery and Spices, located at 6233 South Blvd, where a fire had broken out.

Once they arrived, the CFD extinguished the blaze. No injuries were reported.

The fire caused $1 million in damages.

The CFD and an ATF Special Agent determined that the fire at the store was intentionally set by a suspect.

A CMPD Arson Detective identified the suspect as 60-year-old Devendrak Patel.

Patel was arrested and was transferred to the Mecklenburg County Sherriff’s Office where he has been charged with burning of a building of trade.
