Blaring Music, Rattling Windows–Neighbors Say It’s Coming From South Charlotte Church

CHARLOTTE, NC. —  Blaring music, rattling windows, and shaking homes late at night. Neighbors say the noise is coming from a South Charlotte church. Police have been called to the church a dozen times this year for noise complaints.

The reverend tells WCCB the issues are from people who rent the church gym.

Wanda Gilbert says loud, pounding music keeps her up at night, “You’re trying to lay there to go to sleep and you don’t even hear what music they’re playing you just hear, boom, boom, boom.”

She says the noise is coming from Charlotte Presbyterian Church, right across the street. The church rents out its gym for parties and events.

“This constant, every weekend, Friday and or Saturday night, it’s uncontrollable base in the music,” says South Charlotte resident Gary West.

CMPD tells me officers have been called to the church on Scaleybark Road 12 times so far this year because of the noise.

The city’s noise ordinance regulates decibel levels for sound equipment. You can’t go over 50 after 11 p.m. on the weekends, or after 8 p.m. during the week.

CMPD Community Coordinators are working with church leaders and the neighborhood to solve the problem.

The Reverend of the church, Sung Kyu Na, tells WCCB they are revising their rental contract, and limiting the time parties can use the space. He says they also plan to bring in off-duty police officers to patrol the area during events.
