Emerald Hollow Mine Suffers Huge Loss After Weekend Robbery, Vandalism

HIDDENITE, NC — The Emerald Hollow Mine says losses could reach into the hundreds of thousands of dollars after being robbed and vandalized over the weekend.

The popular Alexander County mining site was reportedly targeted overnight Sunday. According to the mine’s Facebook page, thieves emptied out several cash registers after breaking into and vandalizing multiple buildings.

The on-site Lapidary was the hardest hit.

Thieves reportedly stole roughly $60,000 worth of emerald jewelry, emerald pieces and uncut emerald pieces after prying open or busting the glass to several display cases.

The Alexander County Sheriff’s Office says thieves even managed to break into and steal from two safes. Those safes reportedly contained gems left for work by customers.

While the damage is still being assessed, officials with the mine say total losses could reach into the hundreds of thousands.

A GoFundMe page has been established to help cover the cost of damages. Mine officials say an auction will also be held to help recoup some of the losses.
