Matthews Police Identify Armed Robbery Suspect Killed In S.C. Crash

An investigation determined that the two suspects involved in the 8th Street robbery were also responsible for the 7-Eleven and Circle K robberies on Monroe Road.  Additionally, detectives were informed that the suspects also robbed a Sam’s Mart on W. John Street in Matthews shortly after 4am.

At about 5 a.m., detectives were notified that a stolen Lexus SUV was involved in a wreck in Lancaster, South Carolina.  The occupants of the Lexus SUV matched the description of the Charlotte armed robbery suspects.

The driver, 25-year-old Rontavious Clark, of Charlotte, died at the scene. The passenger, identified as 23-year-old Danneil Hughes, also of Charlotte, was taken to a medical facility for treatment.

CMPD Armed Robbery detectives are obtaining warrants for the arrest of Daniel Hughes. Matthews Police have already charged him with Armed Robbery and say an arrest warrant has been issued.

The case is still under investigation and more information will be released as it develops.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are investigating three armed robberies that took place in one hour’s time around Charlotte overnight.

Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department say two to three suspects were involved in each incident.

  • 600 block of 8th Street: An armed robbery happened at 3:30 a.m. The suspects fired a gun, but did not shoot at the victim or buildings. No injuries were reported.
  • 5300 block of Monroe Road: An armed robbery happened at the 7-Eleven at 3:44 a.m. No one was injured.
  • 9100 block of Monroe Road: An armed robbery happened at the Circle K at 4:05 a.m. No one was injured.

No arrests have been made at this time.
