CMPD Charges Suspect In 1992 Sexual Assault Cold Case

CHARLOTTE, NC — A 52-year-old man has been identified as the suspect in a decades old south Charlotte sexual assault cold case.

CMPD says Kenneth McIllwaine is accused of sexually assaulting a then 27-year-old victim on June 5, 1992.

According to the victim’s report, McIllwaine was supposed to give her a ride home but instead, drove her to the 2200 block of Rama Road and sexually assaulted her. He then reportedly dragged the victim out of the car and forced her into a dumpster before taking off.

A sexual assault kit was collected, police say, while the victim was being treated at the hospital in 1992. In 2017, investigators say additional testing was completed thanks to a federal grant received by CMPD.

Detectives reportedly matched the DNA of the suspect to that of McIllwaine.

McIllwaine is currently serving time at the Tabor City Correctional Institute for another rape which occurred in 1995. Police say DNA identified him in that case in 2015.

Kenneth McIllwaine now faces charges of First Degree Kidnapping and Second Degree Rape in connection to the 1992 incident.
