Man Charged After Accident Sends Three To Hospital, One Critically Injured

MATTHEWS, NC — A man is facing several charges after police say he committed multiple traffic violations which led to a serious accident involving three vehicles.

The crash happened around 8:28am on E. John Street. Police say Lanny Hollingsworth, 47, rear-ended a Chevy Volt while trying to make an illegal pass. As a result, Hollingsworth’s van reportedly went into oncoming traffic and hit a VW Beetle head-on.

Police say the driver of the Beetle was taken to CMC with critical injuries, while the driver of the Volt was taken to Novant-Matthews for evaluation. Hollingsworth was also taken to CMC with serious injuries.

Hollingsworth is charged with Driving While Impaired, Driving While License Revoked, Reckless Driving, Exceeding a Safe Speed and Fictitious Tag.
