High Country and Foothills Preparing for Icy Weather, Possible Slick Roads

BLOWING ROCK, N.C. – Slick roads and power outages are expected in the High Country and parts of the Foothills overnight.

“Ice is not forgiving. Snow is easy, ice is not,” says Blowing Rock resident Terry McLaury.

She was the last customer of the night at Village Hardware.

The store sold out of ice melt before getting a second shipment in, late in the day.

“When I saw the ice melt right inside the door, I thought I might as well go ahead and be prepared and get some,” McLaury says.

Store owner Stephanie Johnson says for most people in the High Country, snow is no big deal, but ice…

“Well, ice is very different. Those that have four-wheel drives think that they can do anything. You can’t in ice,” Johnson says.

She says it’s been a few years since the area has seen a lot of ice.

“As far as a real ice storm, we’ve been very fortunate,” Johnson says.

So far, NCDOT crews haven’t been able to place any brine on the roads because of the rain.

Salt trucks will be out Thursday, if needed.

Another big concern is trees and limbs taking down power lines.
