Armed Robbery Suspects Taken into Custody After SWAT Standoff
YORK CO., S.C. – A SWAT standoff with two armed robbery suspects ended after nearly five hours Monday night.
Investigators say Jamal Lee, 35 and Emily Johns, 34 gave themselves up peacefully. U.S. Marshals were trying to serve a warrant when the pair barricaded themselves inside a mobile home on Catawba Church Road, near Rock Hill.
The pair, thought to be boyfriend and girlfriend, were wanted for an armed robbery October 26th in Wisconsin and were also wanted in Minnesota.
SWAT worked for hours trying to negotiate with them, even using a Rock Hill police robot.
Trent Faris, with the York County Sheriff’s Office says it was an offer from negotiators that helped convince them to cooperate.
“We’d call again. They’d talk. They’d hang up. And… they asked for a couple of cigarettes and that was the key, and we said hey we’ll give you some cigarettes, you take a moment to think about it, and come on outside, and that’s what they did,” Faris said.
