Bladen County DA Releases Statement On Investigation Into Possible 9th District Race Election Fraud

BLADEN COUNTY, NC — Bladen County District Attorney Jon David released a statement Tuesday afternoon to clarify his office’s role in the investigation into allegations of possible election fraud in the 2018 9th Congressional District race.

“I am deeply troubled by recent reports of alleged voter fraud in Bladen County during the November election. All candidates, regardless of political affiliation deserve a level playing field to ensure that they can fairly compete in an election. Indeed our community demands a high level of integrity in the voting process. Any behavior which undermines a fair election should be thoroughly investigated and vigorously prosecuted. Sadly, there have been past incidents of alleged fraud involving absentee ballots in Bladen County. During the 2016 election cycle, complaints about this problem were made to the North Carolina State Board of Elections and Ethics Enforcement Team (NCSBE). This agency began investigating the matter in November 2016 and subsequently partnered with the State Bureau of Investigation to expand the probe. The investigation uncovered the fact that some of the offending behavior occurred in Wake County. Accordingly, the entire matter was referred to District Attorney Lorrin Freeman on January 26, 2018 (See attached letter). During the pendency of this investigation new allegations have surfaced during the November 2018 election involving some of the same targets. My office is in close conversation with District Attorney Freeman as well as the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina to coordinate our efforts should a prosecution be warranted.”

The DA’s Office also released a letter sent back in January to the interim assistant director of the NCSBI Special Investigations Unit regarding an investigation into similar election fraud allegations raised during the 2016 elections in Bladen County.
