Signing Day Surprise: 4-Star Monroe Quarterback Flips To UNC

CHAPEL HILL, NC — Four-star quarterback Sam Howell announced during a Signing Day ceremony Wednesday afternoon that he will sign with the Tar Heels and enroll in classes this January.

According to a report by 247Sports.com, the 6-foot-1 and 220 pound Sun Valley High School quarterback will be participating in the All-American Bowl before enrolling at UNC. Howell, named the 2018 Gatorade NC Football Player of the Year, also participated in the 2018 Shrine Bowl on December 15th.

Howell threw for 3,256 yards, 37 touchdowns and 8 interceptions this past season. He also rushed for a team-high of 1,392 yards while helping lead his team to a 10-3 record.

247Sports.com reports that Howell made a verbal commitment to ACC rival Florida State in April, but began to waiver on his decision when he attend UNC’s home opener in September. Howell reportedly made an official visit to the university in mid-November, followed by an official trip to FSU in later that same month.

The FSU trip seemed to have locked in Howell’s commitment to the Noles, according to reports, until FSU lost their offensive coordinator to the head coach position at UMass.

With UNC announcing the hire of a new head coach following Howell’s first official visit, the 4-star quarterback was able to make a second trip to Chapel Hill on December 16th and meet with the Tar Heels’ new offensive coordinator. Howell made his announcement to sign with UNC three days later.
