Driver Identified In Deadly Crash On W. Morehead Street, Police Say Speed A Factor

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — CMPD says the driver who crashed into a tree and died on West Morehead Street in front of the Panther’s Stadium on Thursday has been identified as 31-year-old Demetrice Antwan Gibson.

Around 6:15 a.m., Gibson was traveling northwest on West Morehead Street in his 2007 Buick Lucerne. Officials say he was driving above the posted speed limit and lost control. The Buick began to skid and then slid off the road to the right. The front bumper of the Buick grazed one tree, then continued off the roadway and struck a second tree on the driver’s side.

Gibson was trapped in the crushed vehicle and was pronounced dead on scene by Medic. His family has been notified of his death.

Excessive speed was a contributing factor in the crash, but impairment is not suspected, authorities say.

The crash is under investigation.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred in Uptown early Thursday.

Around 6:15 a.m., a white, 4-door car reportedly struck a tree on West Morehead Street between Mint Street and I-77 around Bank of America Stadium. The driver has died, authorities say.

The westbound lanes of Morehead Street were closed for several hours.

They are not expected to reopen for a couple of hours.

Crime units are on scene investigating the deadly wreck.

Expect traffic delays in the area.

Drivers are asked to use John Belk Freeway or West Boulevard as alternate routes.
