Ellen DeGeneres Faces Backlash After Defending Kevin Hart
Ellen DeGeneres still wants Kevin Hart to host the Oscars and she’s working to make it happen.
Hart announced he was stepping down after saying he would not apologize for past homophobic tweets.
He later had a change of heart and did apologize, but after he walked away from hosting the awards show.
Hart was on Ellen’s talk show Friday and the host defended Hart against what she called a malicious social media campaign and even said she called the Academy to vouch for him.
“I called the academy today because I really want you to host the Oscars,” DeGeneres said. “So I called them. I said, ‘Kevin’s on.’ I said, ‘I have no idea if he wants to come back and host. But what are your thoughts?’ And they were like, ‘Oh my God. We want him to host. We feel like that maybe he misunderstood or it was handled wrong or maybe we said the wrong thing, but we want him to host.'”
Ellen also advised Hart to ignore his online critics. “There are so many haters out there,” DeGeneres said. “Whatever is going on in the internet, don’t pay attention, that is a small group of people being very loud.”
Lots of people are tweeting that they were angry and disappointed with Ellen’s interview.
Some say she should have asked Hart more challenging questions or taken the time to make this a learning moment.
Others are mad about the way she seemed to dismiss his critics in the LGBTQ community.
