CIAA Tournament Leaving Charlotte

One of the biggest events in Charlotte is leaving. WE’re still waiting on an official announcement, but Charlotte City Leaders say the CIAA Tournament is moving to Baltimore, Maryland after the 2020 season. Charlotte has hosted tournament since 2006, but Norfolk and Baltimore also put in bids. With Baltimore offering $2 million in scholarship funding.

The Tournament generates roughly $50 million in economic impact each year, the annual tournament has made headlines for action off the court in recent years. Memphis Rapper, Young Dolph’s SUV was shot up on North Graham Street in Uptown during the 2017 tournament. He was here to perform at a party that was not a CIAA sanctioned event. And in 2016, someone fired 40 to 50 shots with an AK-47 outside the Hyatt place hotel in Uptown. A lot of mixed reviews on social media. Some are shocked to see the tournament go while other say Charlotte doesn’t have the nightlife for the tournament.
