14-Year-Old Charged With Stealing Charlotte Woman’s SUV

CHARLOTTE, NC — Police have charged a 14-year-old juvenile with stealing a woman’s SUV after she reportedly left it running and went into a library.

According to reports, the victim went to the Charlotte Regional Library on Conference Drive around 11:18am Friday. Police say she left her SUV running while she went inside, and came out to see the young man driving off.

Police spotted the SUV a short time later on Monroe Road at Rama Road and attempted to pull the suspect over. Officers say he sped off and tried to run on foot after stopping in a nearby apartment complex.

The juvenile suspect was taken into custody and charged with Larceny of a Motor Vehicle. Police say he has since been released into family custody.

CMPD wants to remind residents of the following tips to help avoid these type of crimes:

  • Never leave your car unattended with the engine running
  • Always lock your car and close your windows
  • Do not hide spare keys in or under the vehicle
  • Invest in an alarm system or theft deterrent device
