Officials say the “No Swimming” advisory placed on part of Lake Wylie after a recent sewage spill has been lifted.
The advisory was placed on Withers Cove on January 31st. Officials say water samples collected by Char-Meck Storm Water Services show bacteria levels have fallen back into safe limits.
Original Story (Jan. 31, 2019):
Mecklenburg County, NC – A NO SWIMMING advisory was issued today for Wither’s Cove on Lake Wylie just south of the Shopton Road West bridge in Mecklenburg County.
The “no swimming” advisory was issued after an estimated 4,460 gallons of sewage discharged into Neal Branch at 10720 Big Bear Drive in Charlotte, NC on January 29, 2019. Neal Branch enters the back of Wither’s Cove on Lake Wylie. The discharge was caused by a blockage in Charlotte Water’s sewer line at this location. The blockage has been removed and the discharge stopped.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services staff will monitor water quality in the affected area until conditions are deemed safe for human contact at which time the no swimming advisory will be lifted.
Rusty Rozzelle, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services’ Water Quality Program Manager, said the advisories are standard procedure. “It was necessary to close the area to recreation because of the potential risk to human health. That’s because Lake Wylie is designated as recreational waters,” said Rozzelle.
