NCDMV Offices Will Be Closed Saturday For Statewide System Upgrade

RALEIGH, NC — All North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles offices will be closed Saturday, February 23rd due to a statewide computer system upgrade that is taking place. Online driver services will also be unavailable from 7am Saturday until 3pm Sunday due to system maintenance.

The upgrades are related to the State-To-State Verification Service, which the NCDMV is scheduled to launch on Monday.

The service is part of the new federal REAL ID Act and will allow DMV offices to check other state databases to ensure an applicant does not have an existing license or ID card currently issued in another state. If an applicant does have existing out-of-state issuance, it will be canceled upon the issue of a driver license or ID card in the state in which they’re applying.

NCDMV officials say all existing NC driver license and ID card issuances will be checked for duplicates once the program takes effect. It is estimated that more than 210,000 NC customers have duplicate issuances in other states.

Currently, 21 states are participating in the new program. They include:

Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Additional states are expected to join by 2022.
