CATAWBA COUNTY, NC — The Catawba County District Attorney’s Office says a Catawba County Sheriff’s deputy will not be charged in connection to a deadly accident that occurred on February 13th.
Troopers with the NCSHP say Deputy Anthony Stobbe collided with 27-year-old Hernan Cortez’s 2003 Honda Civic around 1:14am at the intersection of McDonald Parkway and 12th Avenue Drive NE (Spencer Road). Cortez died at the scene.
Deputy Stobbe received minor injuries and was taken to Catawba County Medical for treatment.
According to investigators, Cortez was traveling 20 mph over the posted speed limit and had a blood alcohol level of .18 leading up to the crash.
Deputy Stobbe was not impaired, officials say, but was traveling 12 mph over the posted speed limit.
Based on results of the investigation, the DA says no charges will be filed against Deputy Stobbe in relation to the deadly accident.
