CMPD Charges Two Suspects Connected To Overnight Vehicle Theft, Shooting

CHARLOTTE, NC — Police have charged two suspects in connection to a vehicle theft and shooting that happened overnight in north and northwest Charlotte.

Investigators say a Blue Kia Sorento was stolen on Griers Grove Road near Beatties Ford around 3am. The vehicle had reportedly been left running and unattended at the time of the theft.

Less than 10 minutes later, a shooting was reported roughly two miles away on Nevin Road. Responding officers say they heard gunshots in the area and witnessed a suspect vehicle leaving at a high rate of speed.

Officers stopped the vehicle and say three firearms possibly tied to the shooting were found inside. The stolen Sorento was also found crashed nearby, officials say, with what appeared to be two bullet holes.

Deric Smith has been charged with Larceny of a Vehicle and Possession of a Stolen Vehicle.

Justin Manley is charged with two counts of Discharge Weapon Into Occupied Property, Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill, Firearm by Felon, Concealed Carry Weapons Violation, and multiple traffic citations.

Police have not said if the two men knew each other or exactly how the incidents were connected.
