Walter Smith has been arrested and is currently being held at the Catawba County Jail.

Original Story (March 28, 2019):

NEWTON, NC — Police have identified 36-year-old Walter Smith as the suspect accused of robbing two convenience stores within six hours.

Police say the Circle K on E. 20th Street was robbed around 11:33 Wednesday night, and a Cubbard Express on Highway 10 East in Claremont was robbed around 6:14am Thursday.

An employee at the Circle K told investigators the suspect demanded money, but never showed a weapon and made no attempt to hide his identity. Police quickly identified Smith as the suspect using surveillance footage.

Police say Smith visits that store several times a week and is known to officers due to prior experiences.

Investigators say they also matched Smith to the Cubbard Express robbery after reviewing surveillance footage of the crime.

Smith is described as a light skin man between the age of 30 and 40. He was last seen wearing a dark green Colorado State hoodie.

A warrant for the charge of Common Law Robbery has been obtained by the Newton Police Department. The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office has also obtained warrants for Larceny.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call 911.
