Over 1,200 CMS Teachers Request May 1st Off For Rally, But Superintendent Says He’s Still Not Ready To Close Schools

CHARLOTTE, NC — The superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools says more than 1,200 teachers have asked to take May 1st off to attend a rally in Raleigh.

During Tuesday night’s Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Wilcox said it will be tough to cover that many classes but he is not ready to close schools just yet.

In 2018, CMS did close for a similar rally in which more than 2,000 teachers from the district joined 16,000 from across the state. The rally was to ask lawmakers for higher pay and more funding.

The superintendent could make a decision about classes on May 1st by the end of the week.
