CMPD Investigating 13-Year-Old’s Death Sunday On Mountain Island Lake

CHARLOTTE, NC — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating after a 13-year-old died while boating on Mountain Island Lake Sunday afternoon.

Multiple agencies, including Huntersville Fire, Charlotte Fire, North Carolina Wildlife and CMPD responded to Mountain Island Lake at Latta Plantation off Sample Road around 3:17pm.

Officials say a 13-year-old boy was recovered by Charlotte Fire Department and pronounced dead around 5:06pm.

The teen was one of four juveniles and four adults on board a boat that police say was anchored on the lake.

The incident reportedly happened while the four juveniles were playing on and around a large floating pad, which was tied off to the boat. The victim, police say, was not wearing a life-jacket at the time of the incident.

Though the official cause of death is still under investigation, police say they have not found any signs of foul play at this time.

The victim’s name is not being released at this time due to age. CMPD says the investigation is active and ongoing.
