Man Sentenced To Life In Prison For Toddler’s Death In 2016

CHARLOTTE, NC — A man found guilty of killing a 2-year-old boy in 2016 will now serve the rest of his life in prison.

A jury found Patrick Chambers, 33, guilty of First Degree Murder on Monday in the 2016 death of 2-year-old Drakeford Watts. A judge sentenced Chambers to life in prison without the possibility of parole shortly after the verdict.

Watts was found unresponsive at a home on Farmpond Lane on July 25, 2016. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment, and was pronounced dead a short time later.

The medical examiner said Watts died from blunt force trauma and had massive injuries to his head and abdominal areas.

Both Chambers and Watts’ mother, Tenisha Wells, were arrested and charged with the toddler’s murder. Officials say Chambers had been living with Wells leading up to the murder.

Wells pleaded guilty in 2018 to Felony Child Abuse By Grossly Negligent Omission.

Officials say Watts was three months away from turning 3-years-old at the time of his death.
