STATESVILLE, NC — A Virginia woman is facing charges after investigators say she embezzled more than $45,000 while exploiting an elderly woman she cared for.
Lincoln County deputies say family members filed a report on August 8, 2018 regarding their grandmother being financially scammed by her caretaker.
During the investigation, authorities reportedly found discrepancies in the victim’s bank account and located surveillance video of the suspect, identified as Donnetta Watkins, making multiple transactions without the victim’s permission.
Between January 2016 and September 2018, Watkin’s reportedly took $47,663.25 from the victim’s account. Officials say the victim was in a nursing care facility when the fraudulent transactions were made.
Warrants were issued on Watkins for three counts each of Felony Embezzlement by Trustee and Felony Exploitation of Disabled or Elderly Person.
Deputies say she turned herself in on the charges Tuesday. Watkins was given a $50,000 bond.
