Campus Police Officer Credited With Quickly Taking UNC Charlotte Shooting Suspect Into Custody

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A UNC Charlotte Police Officer is being credited with quickly taking the shooting suspect into custody.

Sergeant Rick Gundacker is a 25-year law enforcement veteran.  He rushed into the Kennedy building moments after the shots were fired.

“As I was getting closer, students were running at me, and it became really real,” says Gundacker.  “There was the process of my brain, going through things, once I had him in custody, I needed to help the victims. I treat these students like my kids.”

Gundacker added, “I’m proud of the officers that responded also, the officers were in that building with me. I wasn’t the only one.”
