CMPD Identifies Driver Killed In Early Morning Crash

CHARLOTTE, NC — CMPD has identified the driver killed Thursday morning in west Charlotte.

The accident happened around 8:49am on Freedom Drive near Toddville Road. Police say Ledane Poplin was pronounced dead on the scene.

According to witnesses, Poplin was seen speeding through the area and crossing into oncoming lanes multiple times before the crash. Investigators say Poplin’s 2004 Chevrolet Venture van then crossed the double yellow line and collided head on with a 2006 Ford Econoline van pulling a trailer.

A third vehicle was unable to avoid the crash, police say, and also crashed into Poplin’s van.

The driver of the Econoline van was taken to Atrium Health with serious injuries. The driver and passenger of the third vehicle were transported with minor injuries to Presbyterian Hospital.

CMPD says speed and impairment on the part of Poplin are suspected factors at this time. Poplin was also not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, police say.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
