CHARLOTTE, NC — A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control civilian employee has been charged with embezzlement, according to CMPD.
Police say Nicholas Hopkins is accused of using a City of Charlotte gas card to buy fuel for his personal vehicle on 11 different occasions. The purchases were all reportedly made at a 7-Eleven on Providence Road between October 2018 and May 2019 and totaled roughly $530.
The investigation into Hopkins began after irregularities were found on the gas card issued to him by the city, police say.
CMPD Chief Kerr Putney said in a statement, “I expect all City of Charlotte employees to abide by the law. Whenever someone fails to do so, we will hold him or her accountable.”
Hopkins is charged with one count of embezzlement, which is a Class H felony. His wife, Heather Hopkins has also been charged with one count of false pretense, a Class H felony, in connection to her husband’s alleged crimes.
Officials say Hopkins has been a civilian employee with AC&C since December 2008, and is currently in the process for termination from his position.
The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
