Survivor of UNC Charlotte Shooting Walks in Graduation
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A survivor of the UNC Charlotte shooting walked across the graduation stage on Saturday. Emily Houpt received her Bachelor’s Degree in International Studies.
It comes less than two weeks after the campus tragedy that killed two of her classmates.
Her fellow graduates say they are inspired by her courage.
One of Houpt’s classmates who died was also recognized. Riley Howell’s family accepted his Bachelor of Arts degree – awarded in memoriam.
Campus leaders say they tried to balance a celebration with a remembrance for those lost.
They held a moment of silence for Howell and Reed Parlier, who also died.
They announced scholarships in honor of the victims.
Graduates say the campus and community have truly come together over the past days.
