LINCOLNTON, NC — The father of a two-year-old child who accidentally shot a one-year-old Sunday morning has been charged.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, after consulting with the Lincoln County District Attorney, has charged Dylan Moose, 23, with Storing a Firearm in a Manner Accessible to a Minor.
Just before noon on May 12th, deputies were called to Moose’s home on Lightview Lane in reference to a one-year-old child being shot. Investigators say the child had a bullet wound to the head, but it appeared to be a graze and did not penetrate the skull.
The shooting reportedly happened after the two-year-old retrieved a .380 caliber handgun from a nightstand while they were playing in the the parents’ bedroom.
Detectives say Moose was outside smoking when he heard a loud pop and rushed back inside. Moose and his wife found the one-year-old shot and called 911.
The child was taken to Atrium Health Care in Charlotte by Lincoln County EMS, officials say, and is expected to be okay.
The LCSO says Moose was released on a $5,000 bond.
Deputies remind parents that gun safety locks are available at the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office at no charge.
