Parents Worried About Gas Station Being Built Near School Playground
FORT MILL, S.C. – Some local parents are fighting to keep a gas station from opening next to their children’s school.
Parents at Doby’s Bridge Elementary are worried about crime and gas fumes impacting students on a nearby playground.
“The playground where the children are playing is directly next to where they’re putting in the fuel tanks,” says parent Lisa Kumpula.
The gas station is planned as part of a development on the Fort Mill Southern Bypass.
Several families rallied outside a Fort Mill school board meeting on Tuesday night.
“For me it’s pretty simple, I mean air quality is equivalent to children’s health,” says parent Brian Hutchinson.
Nearly 1,000 people have signed an online petition against the gas station.
Parents are urging local leaders not to approve building or alcohol permits.
WCCB Charlotte reached out to the developer but did not hear back.
