Healthy Dog Euthanized to Buried With Its Owner
A woman’s dying wish to have her healthy dog put to sleep and buried with her is sparking outrage.
The Virginia woman had it written into her will that she wanted her Shih Tzu Emma to be euthanized so they could be laid to rest together.
The woman died in March and Emma went to an animal shelter.
Shelter workers say they were heartbroken, but had no choice but to turn the dog over, so it could be put down and then cremated.
“We did suggest they could sign the dog over on numerous occasions, because it’s a dog we could easily find a home for and re-home it,” said Chesterfield County Animal Services manager Carrie Jones.
Officials say the vet that euthanized Emma did nothing illegal.
Pets are considered personal property in many states, including Virginia, so putting down a healthy dog or cat isn’t against the law.
Still, many vets say they have ethical issues with it.
