Record Heat for Speed Street and Coca-Cola 600 Race Weekend

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It’s going to be a hot holiday weekend. Whether you’re on the water, checking out Speed Street, or at the Speedway, be prepared for record-breaking heat. People are not letting the heat stop them from having a good time.

“Sweat is just rolling down my back!” laughs Sharon Wilson. She had to take a break after a steamy afternoon at Speed Street.

“I just had to sit and rest for awhile,” she says.

With temps rising Friday afternoon, people reached for cold drinks, popsicles, and ice cream.

The health department is warning you should drink plenty of water and take it easy if you’re going to be outside this weekend.

Muscle cramps, dizziness, or nausea could be signs you’re getting overheated.

A few miles north at Charlotte Motor Speedway, campers mostly stayed inside.

But not Bill Barnett. He says sunscreen every couple of hours, and he’s OK.

“Right out here enjoying it,” he explains.

Back at Speed Street, the crowds grew as the sun set and the shade set in.

“Definitely and the breeze is coming right through the buildings so we’re set,” says Concord resident Marcus Corbin.
