CHARLOTTE, N.C. – An activity bus belonging to Victory Christian Center crashed into a concrete barrier on I-77 and burst into flames Sunday afternoon, killing one, Daisy Withers, 82 and injuring 3 others. One of the injured remains in critical condition.
The driver of the bus, Scotty Lewis, 62, has been charged with Misdemeanor Death By Motor Vehicle due to an unsafe movement violation. NC State Highway Patrol said Lewis tried to leave I-77 southbound at exit 9C at the last second and hit a concrete barrier. Lewis was injured and is still in hospital. Lewis has a commercial driver’s license and the bus was permitted and insured correctly. NCSHP will do follow up inspection on the bus but it will be limited due to the fire damage.
Lewis was taking elderly members of the church to lunch when the crash happened around 2:10 PM Sunday.
