4 steps to take after a car accident

Car accidents are seriously scary. Not only is there the possibility of injury to you, your passengers, and the people in the other vehicle, you also have to contend with damage to both vehicles and how it’s going to get fixed (and who’s going to pay for it). Toyota of N Charlotte is here with tips from our Toyota Collision Center to help make the process after a car accident a little less stressful – check it out.

How should you first react after a car accident?

Step 1: Stay calm and assess everyone’s injuries.

It’s easy to panic when you’ve been in a car accident but staying calm will serve you well in the hours to come. Your first step should be to assess your own injuries as well as everyone else in the car’s. If anyone is injured, call 911 to get paramedics on the scene before you take any further steps. You should also call the police to notify them of the accident and get a police report started.

Step 2: Move your car and start gathering information.

If you’re able to, our N Charlotte Toyota Collision Center recommends moving your car off the road and onto the shoulder so you can avoid being hit by another vehicle. After you and the other driver have done so, start exchanging information. You’ll need to gather details like:

Full name

Telephone number for contact

Make, model, color, and license plate number of their car

Their insurance information

Also, take pictures of both vehicles and the scene of the accident so you have better documentation for the police report and insurance if necessary.

Step 3: File a claim and notify your insurance company

You don’t want to drag your feet when it comes to filing a claim after a car accident. The sooner, the better! Have your police report on hand to determine whose fault the accident was. If it was your fault, contact your insurance company. If it was their fault, contact their insurance company. You’ll need to provide them with all the facts to get a claim started so you can get repairs on your car underway as soon as possible.

Step 4: Schedule an inspection of your vehicle with the insurance company.

Despite your word and your documentation, most insurance companies still want to inspect your vehicle to determine the damage done and how much they’ll pay to cover fixing it. They’ll also determine if the car is worth fixing at all or if you should just be compensated for your loss. If repairs are a possibility, then the insurance company will likely refer you to a body shop (like our N Charlotte Toyota Collision Center) to get the repair process started.
