Danger Online: CLT Teen Assaulted by Social Media Stranger She Met in Person

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – An east Charlotte gas station meant safety for a 13-year-old girl in Charlotte Thursday night. “It is scary! Oh my God,” said passerby Cynthia Johnson.

The girl ran inside the gas station, police say, at 10:45 PM, and asked for someone to call 911. About an hour earlier, she’d gone by herself to meet up with a man she met on social media. Johnson’s advice: “Any woman should travel in packs.”

He was alone in his car when he picked her up from an unidentified church parking lot on Eastway Drive, but there was another car with him. The girl says the man drove her to an unknown apartment complex and sexually assaulted her. Then, he left her, she says, with the two men in the other car. The girl says those men also sexually assaulted her.

When it was over, they drove her to the gas station, and let her go. “This is scary. I hate this. I hate this for the young lady. Oh my God,” says Johnson.

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Detective was just leaving the gas station when WCCB arrived Thursday. She didn’t want to talk with us on the record, but told us the 13-year-old girl is okay.

There are surveillance cameras inside and outside the gas station. The manager and the police both tell WCCB they can’t share the video right now, but the detective did say the cameras captured some images that may be helpful in this case.

A spokesperson for Quik Trip tells WCCB, “QT hopes the individual is ok and we are pleased we were able to provide some assistance.”

A dangerous reminder for everyone, about safety and social media. Johnson says, “This hooking up online and meeting ’em somewhere, this is awful.”

The teen says she knew the first suspect by the name “Franko.” He is described as an approximately 19-year-old black or Hispanic man, approx 5’9″ tall with a thin build, a beard, and longer than collar-length hair. He was driving a two-door black Infiniti with gold rims and a possible NC license plate starting with the letters “HBJ-.”

Police say the victim was unable to provide a good description of the other suspects, but says they were in a grey, four-door sedan with black rims, tinted windows, and a sun roof.
