Original Story:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The CMPD says they have a suspect in custody after a woman was kidnapped and sexually assaulted in the University area Saturday morning.

The incident began at about 2 a.m., on Rebecca Bailey Drive, at the 49North apartments off University City Boulevard near Mallard Creek Church Road.

Police say the suspect approached a woman in the parking lot of the apartment complex and forced his way into her car.

The suspect made the woman drive to several different locations before sexually assaulting her.  She was able to escape near the intersection of North Tryon Street and University City Boulevard, but the suspect took her vehicle.

The woman immediately contacted police and CMPD officers located the vehicle shortly thereafter.   Officers attempted a traffic stop but the suspect did not stop and led police on a short pursuit.

Following the chase, the suspect ran from the vehicle at Pondridge Court.  Officers were not able to locate the suspect at that time but say that he was identified and taken into custody on Monday.

The case is still under investigation and more information will be released as it develops.
