Bill Would Force Big Tech Companies to Reveal How Much They Make Selling User Data
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – How much is your data worth?
A new bill would force top tech companies like Facebook and Google to reveal how much money they make selling the information you share.
Tech and cyber security expert Emory Simmons, with CMIT Solutions, says people underestimate how valuable their information is to advertisers.
“Who we are, what we believe in, whether we voted in the last election.” Simmons explains.
Backers of the bill say the information would provide transparency.
But will it change habits?
“I hope that it will. I hope that… people as they become more aware of the privacy, the information they’re giving up, that they will alter their behavior,” Simmons says.
