Man With Over 60 Arrests Charged With Assaulting Multiple CMPD Officers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man with over 60 arrests in Mecklenburg County has been arrested again after the CMPD says he assaulted multiple officers attempting to detain him Wednesday night.

The CMPD says Officer Quentin Blakeney responded to a larceny in progress at the 2nd & Charles Store on South Boulevard near Tyvola Road where he found the suspect, 23-year-old, Romell Donkiese Kamal Mackey.

Police say when Officer Blakeney attempted to place Mackey in custody, he immediately resisted arrest and assaulted Officer Blakeney with bruises, lacerations, and a possible head injury.

According to the CMPD, a community member helped Officer Blakeney subdue the suspect and take him into custody.

Officer Blakeny was treated for his injuries at Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center.

Authorities say while two other officers were taking Mackey to the Meckelnburg County Intake Center, he attempted to escape custody and assaulted those officers as well.

Mackey is charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Government Official, Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Unlawful Concealment (shoplifting), Damage to Property, and  two counts of Resist/Obstruct/Delay a Law Enforcement Officer, Malicious Conduct by a Prisoner, two counts of Damage to Property, and two counts of Communicating Threats.

Prior to this incident, Mackey had been arrested 63 times for crimes including:first degree burglary, first degree trespassing, auto theft, armed robbery, possession of stolen goods, possession of marijuana and resisting arrest.

He was on electronic monitoring for armed robbery and larceny from auto charges, at the time of his most recent arrest.
