Rock Hill Police Officer Accidentally Fires Weapon At Police Station

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Police say an officer with the Rock Hill Police Department accidentally discharged his weapon in an office at the Rock Hill Police Department Law Center.

Investigators say Lt. Vernon Harmon was cleaning his personal off-duty firearm after returning from the firing range just before 4pm on August 12th when the incident happened.

The bullet reportedly struck an interior window and ricocheted into a lobby hallway wall, according to a news release.  Police say a citizen was in the hallway and was approximately 14 feet away from where the bullet hit.  No injuries were reported.

Due to this incident, officials say the cleaning of firearms will not be allowed inside the Rock Hill Police Department Law Center.  However, officers can still clean their weapons at the armory.
