17-Year-Old Driver Charged Following Death Of Mooresville High Student Athlete In Traffic Accident

Authorities say a 17-year-old Mooresville High School student has been charged after his classmate died, as the result of a traffic accident on campus.

On Friday, August 16th, 2019, the 17-year-old driver was charged by criminal summons with Misdemeanor Death by Vehicle.

On Saturday, August 3rd, 2019, 15-year-old Gavin Sharpe was injured during a service project on the Mooresville High School Magnolia Campus.  Sharpe died on Monday, August 5th.

MOORESVILLE, NC — A 15-year-old student athlete at Mooresville High School died Monday from injuries he sustained in an accident late Saturday afternoon.

The Mooresville Graded School District says Gavin Sharpe was injured around 6:30pm during a service project on the Mooresville High School Magnolia Campus. According to the district, Sharpe succumb to his injuries Monday.

The following statement was released following his death:

The Mooresville Graded School District can confirm and is grieving the loss of Mooresville High School student, Gavin Sharpe. Gavin was involved in an accident during a service project on the Mooresville High School Magnolia Campus on Saturday afternoon.

To help students and staff deal with this loss, the district will be offering additional counseling services for both students and staff as we begin the new school year. In an effort to respect the privacy of the Sharpe family, the school district will not offer additional comment at this moment. We will, however, continue to keep this family in our thoughts and prayers through this difficult time.

On Saturday, the district sent a release out saying a student had been seriously injured and hospitalized. Sharpe reportedly fell off of the back of a pickup truck during the service project.

He was a member of the Mooresville High football team.
