BELMONT, NC — Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement says a raccoon killed during an encounter with two family dogs has tested positive for rabies.
The incident happened around 7pm on Sunday at a home on Wade Street. Officials say two family dogs got into a fight with the raccoon, and killed the animal during the encounter.
The raccoon was sent to the North Carolina Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh where it reportedly tested positive for rabies.
GCPD ACE officials say the family dogs were not up to date on their rabies vaccinations and had to be euthanized due to rabies exposure.
Officials are notifying residents and verifying rabies vaccinations for family animals in the area.
This is the eighth confirmed case of rabies in Gaston County so far this year.
