Two Teens Arrested After Authorities Find Gun Inside Campus Apartment At Wingate University

WINGATE, NC — Police have arrested two suspects accused of having a weapon on Wingate University property Thursday afternoon.

Officials say someone reported a possible weapon being located inside a campus apartment Thursday, which prompted a search by Wingate Police.

Four people were inside the apartment when police found the weapon, which sources have described as an assault style rifle.

Jahwon Hartsfield, 17, and Tristan Jackson, 17, were both arrested and charged in connection to the incident. Police say they are not students at the university.

The other two people inside the apartment are students, according to authorities, and have been temporarily suspended pending a University investigation.

Police say they believe this incident is related to a traffic stop Wednesday night involving one of the two suspects arrested today.

Wingate University sent out the following message Thursday in response to the incident:

“Earlier this afternoon, Campus Safety was made aware of a possible weapon in a residential facility on campus.

Wingate Police were notified and searched the apartment. Two people, who are not Wingate students, were arrested and charged with having a weapon on university property. Police believe this incident is related to a traffic stop made last night on campus involving one of the non-students arrested today.

Two Wingate students, who were also inside the apartment at the time, have been temporarily suspended pending a University investigation.

We want to remind students, faculty and staff that weapons are not allowed on campus.

We are appreciative to the person who reported this suspicious behavior to the proper University officials and encourage others to do the same.

If you see something, say something.
