The Carolina Panthers announced Tuesday the launch of the team’s new “3rd & Goal” program, a flagship literacy initiative in partnership with Scholastic. The program is also supported by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the South Carolina Board of Education.
The program includes a free video series for classroom teachers featuring Panthers players reading grade-level specific books in an interactive read-along presentation. Panthers readers include Luke Kuechly, Taylor Moton and Dontari Poe among others. The program will also feature other literacy events during the school year, including Scholastic Book Fairs at selected schools in North and South Carolina.
Scholastic is providing additional support to the program with Carolina Panthers “3rd & Goal” book displays at Scholastic Book Fairs in North and South Carolina during the 2019-20 academic school year.
“The program’s objective is simple. We want to assist students in K-3 with the goal of achieving grade-level reading proficiencies by the end of third grade, which is an important measuring tool for projecting future student success,” said Panthers Director of Community Relations Riley Fields. “Our hope is the 3rd & Goal series will be a valuable and exciting resource for teachers and students.”
“We are excited to team up with the Carolina Panthers to engage students and empower parents and educators,” said North Carolina State Superintendent Mark Johnson. “Teachers can use this fun resource in their classrooms and parents can use it at home as another way to engage students in the joy of reading.”
